April Color Challenge


Today is the April Color Challenge at Stylin' Stampin' INKspiration. Today is also my mom's birthday. Funny story: when I created this month's color challenge, I didn't realize that it would fall on my mom's birthday. Her favorite color is green. I took full advantage of this irony to kill two birds with one stone. I present to you my mom's birthday card:


I'm guessing there's a good chance that she's going to see her card here before she gets in the mail; but that's ok.

I had so much fun with last week's Ombre challenge that I wanted to try it out again. I used a Stampin' Sponge with the Gumball Green ink and just added more the farther down the cardstock I went.

I have to admit a mistake I made while creating this. When I stamped the Make a Wish, I didn't have my framelits out to measure where I should stamp on the cardstock. So, I either had to cut it off center, or use more cardstock (there was already something on the other side). I decided to cut it off center and then embellish it with candy dots. Now I can say that I got my mom a card, flowers and candy for her birthday! ;)

Ombre

For today's card I played around with a fun Ombre technique that I've been wanting to try for awhile.


If you've been following me for awhile, you have seen cards that I have used one of our spritzers with alcohol and a reinker to dye the ribbon or baker's twine. This was the same principle with a little different execution.

To begin, I filled an empty button container with water and then added one drop of Strawberry Slush reinker. I dipped the entire length of ribbon in the water. I let the ribbon dry. Then I added two more drops of reinker to the water for a total of three drops. I dipped part of the ribbon in this water, but made sure to leave an end with the lightest color. After the ribbon was mostly dry again; I added two more drops of the reinker for a total of five drops. I dipped one end in the water and let the ribbon completely dry. This created a nice ombre effect on my ribbon.

The lightest part of the ribbon kind of looks like it is still white so I took a side-by-side picture for you so that you could see the difference.

Faux Poes Foes

Ok, so if you're not a Gilmore Girls nut like I am, you won't get the title of today's post. What you will get though is that it's Tuesday and I have a fabulous technique for you! It's Faux Leather!


I wrote a tutorial with step by step instructions on achieving this technique. You can find it at Stylin' Stampin' INKspiration. Here's a hint: Masking Tape.

My pointer for assembling this card is to use Sticky Strip! Once you've embossed over the masking tape, it's hard to burnish over the top to get the SNAIL to really stick. Also, if you are gluing layers on top of the faux leather, use Sticky Strip. Anything else won't stick as well!

Here are some different color and tape variations for you:

 Soft Suede ink
Even though I tried to vary my tape, it all kind of ended up going in the same direction.

Old Olive ink
I went a little crazier with the tape on this one. Big pieces, small pieces, random areas. 

Early Espresso ink
Straight lines of tape barely overlapping. Didn't create wow factor in my opinion. 

Crisp Cantaloupe ink
I attempted to do intentional creasing and dimpling on the tape for this one; which is harder to do intentionally. Personally not crazy about the tape or how the lighter color turned out in this one. 

Overall, I think you just need to play with the tape to see how you like it best. The darker colors do seem to work better than the lighter ones.

Bye-Bye to Sale-A-Bration

I needed to create a Quick & Easy card for Stylin' Stampin' INKspiration. It doesn't get any quicker or easier than My Digital Studio!


I used Soft Sky for my background. White Baker's Twine and Soft Suede brads adorn the banners from Banner Blast. The elements at the bottom are all from the Sweet Sorbet Accessory Pack.

With just a few minutes on the computer, I now have a great card front I can print out; or a digital card that I could email to someone, or post on their Facebook wall to let them know I'm thinking about them.

Masculine Monday

I have really struggled over the last ten years to create masculine cards. Therefore, when I saw that today's Design Team challenge at Stylin' Stampin' INKspiration was just that, I jumped in with both feet!

I'm not sure if I've just evolved creatively, or if Stampin' Up! just has some really cool products that make it super easy, or maybe both. Regardless, I was pretty happy with how my card turned out, and it took me less than 10 minutes to design and make it!


My apologies for the giant picture, but I wanted you to be able to see the detail of the frame I made using the Hardwood background stamp. After I stamped it on the Early Espresso, I cut each section into strips and layered them over the Soho Subway DSP. Don't you just love those Essential Wooden Elements? They come cut into several different shapes, so all I had to do was stamp on them and glue them on the card!

I hope that I INKspired you to get outside your creative comfort zone today. I also hope that I remember where this card is come Father's Day. Oh wait, his birthday is in a couple weeks! Perfect!
