Birthday Tag Fun

One of the tags I received in my swap box was a birthday tag that I fell in love with.

I couldn't wait to make my own. I received my order today with 4 packs of Designer Series Paper that I had gotten on our July sale. I grabbed the Birthday Basics DSP and started creating!

Here is my version of this cute tag. I really love all of the patterns in the Birthday Basics pack. The birthday hat pattern was perfect for the "legs." The scallop was punched from the same piece, just flipped over to reveal the pattern on the other side. I popped the greeting up with a couple Stampin' Dimensionals. I curled the scallops up on the top layer for a subtle extra dimension. You can't tell unless you know I did it; but I also shaded the edge of the legs with some Baked Brown Sugar ink.
My nieces turn one this weekend, so expect to see some more birthday items from me this week. ;)

Bright & Sunny

Since the weather outside hasn't been bright & sunny; I thought I'd make a card that was. Though we definitely needed this rain. I hadn't realized until last week that there were burnt grass patches in the yard, along with giant cracks in the topsoil.

This card will serve well as a thinking of you, thank you, or birthday card.
This card features Melon Mambo and Island Indigo cardstock, along with the Gingham Garden Designer Series Paper. Cards are a great way to use up scraps of scrapbook paper that you might having from trimming or layering a page. Speaking of our Designer Series Paper, tomorrow is the last day to get a free pack when you purchase three. The Daffodil Delight Seam Binding adds the final pop of color to "tie" the card together. (yes that pun was intended)

Get Well Card

My husband & I had a staycation weekend so there was no working all weekend, hence the lack of blog posts. Time to get back to work!

Today's card features more washi tape. I covered a piece of whisper white cardstock with some of the Gingham Garden washi tape. I then ran it through the Big Shot with the Secret Garden framelits.
The colors used on the card are Crushed Curry, Wisteria Wonder, and Sahara Sand. A bright and sunny card to help someone feel better.

Washi Birthday

Today I decided to focus on washi tape. The card colors are a throwback to my high school colors.

The card stock is Basic Black and Real Red. I used the "notebook" washi tape from the Epic Day This & That pack to imitate photo corners. The stamp image is from Best of Birthdays, which is one of our exclusive 25th Anniversary stamp sets. The greeting says, "a candle for every year might not be such a good idea... happy birthday. It is embossed with silver embossing powder.

Fun 3-D Teacher gift

Tonight is my monthly inspiration class. This is one of the projects I will be teaching tonight. I do have a virtual option for my classes, so if you'd like more information, please email me.

I found samples of this project on one of the demo only Facebook groups I belong to. They had found the idea from a video that one of the UK demos posted on YouTube.

This cute little mug was very easy to make and maybe took me 10 minutes from start to finish.

I think these would make great back to school teacher gifts. You can see here that it will hold pens or pencils; but I also think putting a little cello bag of sweet treats in it would make anyone's day.

Tonight we will be making them with Designer Series Paper (which is currently buy 3, get 1 free). For this one I used whisper white cardstock and stamped the image from Bright Blossoms in Raspberry Ripple & Summer Starfruit. A length of Gumball Green ribbon added the finishing touch.

Ribbon Inspiration

I received my big box of swaps Saturday afternoon! I'm pretty sure my anti-social mailman thinks I'm a little crazy now. I happened to be walking home from work & came down the sidewalk as he went up on my porch. I couldn't see the porch from where I was & I hadn't seen him with a big box, so I'm yelling down the sidewalk, "Did you have a big package for me today?" He just pointed at the porch & walked off. Delivery people just don't get our crafty excitement! 

This was one of the cards that I received from the Any Occasion Card swap. The creator didn't put her name on the card, so I don't know who to credit with making this cute card. The ribbon around the greeting really caught my eye.

I had my Stampin' Up! table set up at a local crop this last weekend. I had decided to get a head start on my Christmas cards. I knew I wanted to do more of the embossed ornaments that I had done for my card candy so that was my starting point.

I had decided on the colors already, but as I was setting the ornament down on the card, it was just missing something. I had ordered this ribbon because I'd seen it on many cute cards & I'm addicted to Baked Brown Sugar at the moment.
I grabbed the ribbon & thought I'd try to figure out how she put the ribbon around her greeting. That's when I discovered it was stretchy! I have to admit here that I feel a little bit idiotic at this point. The ribbon is actually called "3/8" Ruffle Stretch Trim" but I'd never looked at its name until I came here to write this post! At any rate, I really liked the look & it reminded me of some ornaments I made with my Grandma when I was little.
As for the rest of the card, I wanted to keep it simple. I sponged Baked Brown Sugar on the Perfect Plum cardstock. The greeting is stamped in Coastal Cabana on Baked Brown Sugar. I used a Crumb Cake Designer Button on the Victoria Crochet Trim. It would also look cute with the In Color Boutique Details.

Swap Breakdown Day 10- All Occasion Tag

It's here! The last day of our Swap Breakdown! Never fear, I'll be back tomorrow with a feature of how I used the swaps I received back as new inspiration.

This tag is pretty straightforward. I wanted to feature some of the new Stampin' Up! colors and was successful using Smoky Slate, Strawberry Slush, Pistachio Pudding, and Crisp Cantaloupe. My favorite detail was using the Dazzling Details on the cupcake "liner." It was a quick and simple addition.

Swap Breakdown Day 9- All Occasion Tag

When I started thinking about designing tags, I challenged myself to use my framelits. One of the challenges of this swap was that they had to contain at least 3 layers. What better (easier) way to create layers, than with the framelits?

I had purchased the Daydream Medallions set when it first came out, along with the coordinating framelits, and then I had only used them once! After using them on this tag, I'm sold and this set is ranking up there as one of my top layer and background sets.

Sadly the picture doesn't show my favorite details of this card. The biggest layer is embossing with Pool Party (looks great with Midnight Muse). The ribbon was actually also dyed with Pool Party using the reinker, rubbing alcohol, and our Stampin' Spritzer. I wish it showed in this picture because it was really pretty!

This project could easily be used on the front of a card, or even as a card with a little Big Shot trickery!

Swap Breakdown Day 8- Any Occasion Card

As with the card I posted yesterday, this card also had the challenge of only using Basic Black and any one of the 2013-2015 In Colors.
Since my other one had been heavy to mail, and a little more labor intensive, I wanted this one to be quick to teach and easy to replicate.

Of course I turned to Strawberry Slush. What girl doesn't like pink and black together? I love the new Flower Shop stamp set and coordinating Pansy punch; and what's better is that you save 15% when you buy them as a bundle!
Obviously Strawberry Slush stamped on Basic Black wasn't going to work, so it was pretty easy to decide what to stamp. I love this flower image, and refer to it as the grunge flower. (Coming of age in the 90s, I'll probably always be a little "grungy.")
I added the polka dot embossing on the background for extra texture; and used my creative license to add the washi tape since it does have black in it. I thought I'd soften the hard edge feel of the card with a little bling; and the jumbo rhinestones fit perfectly in the middle of these flowers.

I left a greeting off so that this card truly can be used for any occasion.

Swap Breakdown Day 7- Any Occasion Card

The challenge of this swap was that you had to use Basic Black, and then you could only use one other color and it had to be from the 2013-2015 In Color Collection. You could also use a neutral color such as Very Vanilla or Whisper White if necessary.

It sounds easy enough, and I had a pretty good idea what I wanted to do. However, as I was designing I kept thinking of elements to add, and then had to stop myself because it was adding other colors to the card!

I sat down with my Basic Black and all of the In Colors to decide which one looked the best with BB. The Baked Brown Sugar was my favorite. Instantly, I thought "manly, nature, outdoorsy;" and grabbed my Woodgrain Embossing Folder.

I had seen an idea online a few weeks earlier where they had taken an ink pad and covered the raised side of the embossing folder before running the cardstock through the Big Shot. I had done a reverse of this with Versamark to emboss a few years ago, but had never thought of doing it with ink. I was pleased with the outcome and think it made my tree come to life. No two trees have the same bark pattern, and mine didn't either.

I wanted to give some texture to the leaves, but with not being able to use another color, I was at a loss; for a brief moment. I grabbed my Crystal Effects and started covering one of the leaves. I loved the pop and contrast it gave against the stamped leaves.

The last special technique I did for this card was on the Baker's Twine. We don't carry it in Black or Baked Brown Sugar, and I didn't want to use white; and obviously couldn't use the other colors. So I grabbed my reinker and some rubbing alcohol; mixed them in the Stampin' Spritzer and headed out to the front porch. I love how quickly you can transform any of our lighter colored ribbon into any of our colors to match your project!

Oh, and you might have noticed on the Supplies post that I listed Washi Tape as part of this card. When I was wrapping the Baker's Twine around the top layer, I looked around my table and there was the Washi. I grabbed a little piece to stick down the first end. It didn't take much washi, and since it's removeable; if I didn't like where I'd placed it, I could start over! 

This was my second favorite card that I made for the swap. I struggle with designing masculine cards, so I'm happy to have one to use now; and it's inspired me that I can, in fact, design more.

I love our washi tape!

Kept it simple with a button middle.

The wedding color site said for brides that couldn't choose a color were in luck this year. Just go with a rainbow!

 Peach & silver is another great combination. So is Crisp Cantaloupe & Silver! Cheers!

 White on white is back for weddings & this was one of my favorite candies. The white embossing on white card stock is very stunning in person.

 Another of my favorites. Clear embossing on the Coastal Cabana is also very pretty in person!

Swap Breakdown Day 5- Card Candy

This was my first time every making "card candy" so I had to go searching to see what I had signed up for! Ok, technically I had made card candy on a card, but I didn't realize it!

Card candy assortments such as these would make great gifts for that crafty person in your life that stays busy!

When I started designing the card candy, I went to the web and searched for the hot wedding color trends for this year. Sadly, I can't remember exactly what I searched, and my laptop crashed over the weekend, so I can't get to the history to see the website. I had really wanted to share the link with you here.

I'll do a breakdown of each candy here because I had a lot of fun making some of them. Also, you'll notice a difference in my pictures. I apologize for that. Since the Great Laptop Crash of 2013, I currently don't have access to MDS to edit my pictures with.

One of this year's hot wedding colors is going to be mint green. Pistachio Pudding works quite well & pairs easily with Wisteria Wonder. I used the candy dot as a ball for the puppy and busted out my blender pens for the first time in years.

Another one of the top combinations is pink & red. I expect we'll see a lot of this around next Valentine's Day. I used one of my favorite techniques on this card candy. I used the bone folder on the Strawberry Slush to curl it to tear the fibers and separated the two layers which gave a new textured cardstock layer.

The Basic Gray & Blushing Bride combination is also great for baby girl cards.

Black & Champagne were listed as one of the popular classic color combinations.

This one ended up with a western feel, which had not been my intention for the Island Indigo. I added the paper piercing on the bottom layer for some extra texture.

I was mortified when I read that tangerine and pink were one of this year's top color combinations. The article went on to say the brighter the pink the better. I do have to admit after making this project the colors grew on me but I'm still not totally sold. This project features tone-on-tone stamping with the bottom of the cupcake and clear embossing powder on the Melon Mambo for the top half of the cupcake.

Swap Breakdown Day 4- Christmas Card

I just have to say that this was my favorite card that I made for the swap. In fact, if you get a Christmas card from me this year, expect that you will probably see this one!

When making Christmas cards, I tend to go for the non-traditional colors because I'm more of an against the grain sort of girl. But I threw caution to the wind on this one and went traditional!

The Ornament Keepsakes stamp set and coordinating Holiday Ornament framelits were released in last year's Holiday Catalog. You might notice that they are not in the current Annual Catalog, or the soon to be released Holiday Catalog. They are however on the carryover list, along with More Merry Messages, which means that you can order them anytime before 05.31.14.
I had bought the framelits last year to make the "cover ornaments," but I hadn't gotten the stamp set because I had other ornament sets. So, I borrowed this set from my downline (thanks, Steph), and well now, I HAVE TO HAVE IT! It will be going on my next order.

I wanted to do a little something extra with the embossing on this card, so I mixed the Gold and Cherry Cobbler embossing powders together in a separate container. It gave a great effect and I feel made the embossing a little more subtle.
This was the first time I'd used the Edgelits (even though I've had them for a couple years). I can't believe I haven't used them before; I love the extra detail it gave my greeting!

Swap Breakdown Day 3- 3x3 card

3x3 cards a great to have on hand to write a little thank you on for a dear friend, co-worker, or maybe a love note to your sweetie. Also, think about how great they'd be to carry a few in your purse to give out as a Random Act of Kindness.

The layout for this card was what I'd designed for the M&T at my new catalog open house at the end of May. Except our M&T was just a 3x3 tag and not a full card.
I had wanted to feature new products at that open house, and this card is 100% new products.

Layering punched images with our punches is one of my favorite techniques to add a little pop to a card. So what do I do when one of our punches does not have a coordinating bigger punch, such as the Artisan Label? I faux layer it! I cut the punched layer in half and then glue it peeking out a little at the top and bottom.

Swap Breakdown Day 2- WOW! Card

As with the punch art, I was over-thinking this card a lot when I was trying to design it. So I headed to Pinterest in hopes of finding a wow project for inspiration. I struck gold with this pin.

There were minimal instructions on the blog post so I had to figure it out with just a little trial and error.
The card was relatively simple for as complicated as it looks.

You score straight lines at 3 inches on all four sides of your 12 x 12 cardstock. Then grab the Simply Scored Diagonal Scoring Plate and put it on top of your Simply Scored. Score diagonally at 6 and 9 inches on all four sides. Looking at these pictures should help you figure out which ways to fold on the score marks to make it come together. Here's a hint: Valley Folds on all the straight score lines and Mountain Folds on all the diagonal score lines.

I love the Gingham Garden Designer Series Paper that is brand new this year (and through the end of July it's Buy 3, Get 1 Free). I picked these two patterns that weren't too hard on the eyes when folded together. I liked the idea of only putting the DSP on the triangles you would see when it was folded and thought the black cardstock made a nice contrast when it was open. My alma mater's colors are black and gold, so I kept thinking, "Go Hornets!" each time I looked at the card open. I cut the DSP in 3x3 (actually just a smidge under) and then cut them in half diagonally. You will notice that I was a little AR with the Daffodil Delight pattern and made sure that all the lines were going in the same direction when it was folded.
I wanted to add a lighter piece in the middle for a personal message. Using the tone on tone stamping with the Swallowtail allows for the message to be written right over the top of the stamped image. The middle piece of cardstock was cut at 5 1/2x5 1/2.

I plan to offer this as a product-based class in the near future, which will come with a video tutorial, along with the DSP and cardstock. Please let me know if you'd like to participate!

Swap Breakdown Day 1- Punch Art

Since I am a punch art newbie, I was excited to join this group to get some new ideas. The closer it came to the deadline of having to mail the swaps, the more panicked I got about what I should make. (This was the last swap I made) There are so many fabulous punch art ideas out there, but I really wanted to try and come up with an original design, as part of my reason for joining the swap was to challenge myself.

In the end, I kept it REALLY simple; but it's easy to duplicate! Each butterfly took one Pansy Punch, and then I cut off two petals for each side. I used my scrap petal to match up when I cut the others, so that I'd always be using the same wing shapes. I then cut about one-fourth of the Word Window Punch off for its body.

For awhile I was referring to this as my "sad little punch art," but I do have to say that I'm pretty pleased for my initial punch art creation. I can't wait to use this little guy on a card, and maybe use the Tangerine Tango marker on his wings to give him some extra color.

2013 Non-Convention Goers Stampin' Up! Swap

Since I could not attend the Stampin' Up! Annual Convention this year and swap with other demonstrators at Convention; I joined a swap with several other demonstrators who also are not attending convention this year. This is the second time that I've participated in Cindy Umbach's swap and she does a fabulous job organizing them!

If you are not familiar with a swap, here are the details: the swap organizer create categories and requirements within that category. For instance this is one of Cindy's descriptions:
SWAP TYPE 4:
Full Christmas Card:
7 + 1 in a Group! All full cards should measure 4 1/4 x 5 1/2. At least 4 layers with an embellishment!
The 7+1 means that each person makes 8 copies of the same card, and send them to the swap coordinator. The coordinator will keep one for themselves, as a "payment" for organizing the swap, and mail back seven different cards made by other people to that person. So I will get 7 new Christmas cards to use for inspiration.  Or it is possible that another stamper used a Christmas set that I don't own. Now, I will have a sample to share with my clients.

In this post I will just list the supplies that I used on each project. In subsequent posts, I will go into a little more detail about techniques used on the project or how I was inspired to create it. When that blog post is posted, I will link to it under each picture here.

All projects are Stampin' Up! only (SUO). I used the Paper Trimmer and Simply Scored on all projects, so I won't list them in the Supplies Used unless there was something special done with them. Also, all projects used SNAIL adhesive. If other adhesive was used on part of the project, that will be indicated.

July 2013 Stylin' Stampin' Blog Hop

Did you have a great 4th of July? I enjoyed the local display with my husband, but I have to admit I'm very glad that my neighborhood no longer sounds like a war zone until 11:00 every night!

Our blog hop theme this month is birthdays. My card this month is one that I taught at my June card class. It is a double pocket card and is made out of one piece of Designer Series Paper. Two cuts, a few scores, and a little folding; add some adhesive, decorate, and you're done. Well, the recipient of the card might appreciate something being put in the pockets. I really can't tell you what supplies I love most on this card. I love all our Washi Tape as it's so easy to use and adds so much to step up a project. I have used the Epic Day and Gingham Garden Designer Series Papers on several of my projects lately. Label Love is quickly becoming one of my most used stamp sets from the new catalog. The coordinating punch can't be beat! I like to layer behind this punch, by punching out an additional piece, cutting it in half and gluing the halves to the back so they peek out on the top and bottom.

You will see many exciting changes to my blog starting this weekend. I just finished and mailed 76 items for a swap I participated in, which was actually 10 different projects. I will be posting those swap projects this weekend with all the supplies used, and then a daily post featuring each of the projects, especially if I did something "tricky" on them. (Totally not tricky, but lots of fun!)
